7 Insights Working with gomo learning

gomo learning is a responsive, cloud-based learning authoring tool that we have been actively using to develop courses for the last 3 years.
We have experimented using a variety of the new learning authoring tools including Elucidat and Rise and the typical characters, Captivate and Storyline, to develop courses for numerous customers, with varied learning objectives. Of all the responsive, cloud-based learning tools we have used, gomo learning is absolutely the most advanced. Here are our key findings related to building and deploying learning courses with gomo learning.

1) Break a Theme Before You Use a Theme

Our first suggestion is to really learn and understand the boundaries of a theme. This is the best way to explore whether the theme can handle the learning experience you are after. Then, go loud, go ugly, and scale for mobile! You will quickly see what is possible in gomo’s world. Then you can transition to planning your styles wisely by selecting and viewing different combinations that can bring your brand and frame to life. Once you create and break-in all different settings and all sizes, you will start to see what this cloud system is capable of.

2) Go Beyond Device Flexibility

gomo learning allows for device variables to alter the display depending on the learner’s device. Implicit in a successful responsive strategy is not just allowing for device flexibility through responsiveness, but going beyond the device capabilities to allow the learner to control their experiences. This allows you to leave behind the passive learning and assessment model and create courses that allow for the learner to control the pace and direction of learning.

3) Variables, Variables, Variables

A key to understanding the power of gomo learning is in its ability to create variable and customized experiences. gomo’s use of variables and its ability to shape the content and presentation of learning extends control to the learner. Unfortunately in most typical elearning courses, interactions are used to slow progress, stop-gate progress, or control the information flow to the user. Using variables allows the course to be responsive to the learner. Giving control to the learner increases engagement and allows the learner to direct the information throughout the course.

4) Embrace Constraints

As designers, the first thing we noticed about gomo learning was its limits. gomo has set limitations to color, font, and structure within content development, which exist to allow for portability to multiple devices and for consistent responsiveness. At first, this created frustration for us – designers looking for creative freedom – but pairing creativity with constraints allowed new designs to thrive. Sure, there are times that a fifth column setting would be nice, but adapting the design and creativity to the constraints, unleashes new inventiveness.

5) Power Your Learning Transformation Forward

The gomo learning platform is cloud-built and based, which allows us to pursue a design process that is quick and agile. This does means that thinking in a linear process with your internal team, files, file versions, and shared directories will need a refresh. gomo challenges the old workflow and moves learning closer to experience development currently used in web, marketing, and app development.

6) Use Grammarly

A collaborative browser based workflow including clients and designers together is great, but one tool that we miss is grammar checking. I rely on quick sanity checks against fat fingered mishaps, but this isn’t available in the cloud. And authoring content in a system without a spelling and grammar checker can let simple errors get through. But there is an easy fix! We recommend integrating Grammarly’s browser plugin which allows for a fast way to check and keep an eye on the simple typos that can detract from a design and polish process.

7) Micro-Learning

How small and how quick can you make learning? Sure, you can send a link to a passive video experience on YouTube or Vimeo. Or you can create a microlearning experience that frames the video and gives a quick perspective on the topic, brand, and message. And best of all, you can collect analytics in your LMS on the backend. The ability to quickly create and deploy new courses makes the time to live is dramatically shorter than most other platforms, which improves your ability to assess current courses and quickly update and restructure them as needed. This gives you the power to create a content library that can be used for a variety of learners and create a content strategy fueled by microlearning.
